One of my favourite images as a kid was in some readers digest "did you know" sort of book. It was of battleships which were painted in patterns like this so as to appear confusing and to disguise the ships orientation, or to look as if it were multiple ships very close together.

ive got some photos of those somewhere. there was a bunch at the art of camoflage exhibition which was on at the imperial war museum a while back. they were super cool indeed.
