... with the new jamie lidell website. while his old site was, in no uncertain terms, pretty awful, at least it had a carefree charm that the new CMS driven site doesnt. one reaction being "thats not a website, thats a word document, on the internet" - it just looked like something that was done with very little money but to get the content up and let people use it. it didnt annoy me lets just say. i did want to remake it and give it to him for free, because i LOVE his music and think hes a brilliant artist but that was just a silly thought.
now though, theres something which i can only describe as boring. its not horrendously ugly, or really badly laid out, its just that it makes a small yet interesting amount of content look confusing and cluttered along with the amazing feat of being able to really remove any trace of personality from the site itself. with jamie lidells music being such a surprise to so many on first listening (a thirtysomething white guy from brighton with a massive smooth soul voice!) theres none of this character reflected in the site design. the only real visuals coming from the album artwork. he has personality in abundance and thats part of his charm. but with the griddy layout and choice of *IN* font, it all just comes accross as a bit generic. not like the site of someone who live samples and comes onstage wearing a jacket made out of video tape and what looks like a colander as a hat.
i just think its a shame. in these days of broadband and better video streaming capabilities, along with 99.9% of cats using flash 9 or whatever, something really interesting and exciting could have been done alongside the more necessary tour date information etc. hes an artist that you really have to see in action to believe, as he really will leave you grinning and speechless. i love jamie lidell, but i went to the site and got annoyed with how all the 'sections' looked the same from first glance. there was no real focal point and all that happened was that i closed the site and didnt bother going any further.
ah well, maybe im on my own in this opinion. but i just think that it could have been so much better.
