after catching up with a good friend of mine one evening last week, ive been left pondering on the thought of the role of ego in creative work.
obviously, with most creative pursuits, the payback from working is seeing something that you have created being bought into the world. in it you can see your descisions and thoughts, the little mistakes that you made but didnt have time to iron out (not that anyone else would notice them, but you know they are there) and the whole myriad of emotions that goes into making something completely new from scratch, with only yourself to rely on.
it just strikes me as in interesting subject in how some people are able to produce very spontaneous work of staggering simplicity, while others lavish days worth of their time into something where the obvious workload is much more apparent. is one worth more than the other? is one creative route stronger than another because of the hard work that is necessary to complete its execution?
i think most people would say no, including myself. whereas works by artists/designers such as rob ryan and his intricate papercut pieces or sam winston with his minutely complex typographic artworks exhibit quite obvious technical and artistic skill is it possible that some people will stop at appreciating the execution and look no further?
i would really hope not...
