my god, ive had a good week for gigs.
tuesday was final fantasy supported by sebastien tellier. how good? really good. sebastien tellier to start with is pretty bloody entertaining, with his joke almost falling over, removing his trousers and lounging across a very small piano while singing sort of jazz club songs. however, hes not just a jesus looking overly sexual french come belgian man with a pretty face. i really like his work, very much, especially (maybe somewhat predictably) the well known track - la ritournelle. "It has just about every ingredient for an epic tear inducing classic" in the words of the very knowledgable mr michael wright. and hes right. you cant listen to it once. it just has to be played over and over till your all at sea with the ebb and flow of the piano melody. truly beautiful.
then final fantasy... sir, with this rocher already spoiling us.
oh man, hes a clever guy. having played violin since i was very little and not being too bad at it, it still boggles me watching him play. being able to sing and play violin parts and sample and loop them live without looking like your brain is melting is a pretty good thing. incredible music. sensitive and sweeping, with so much depth and warmth. you keep having to remind yourself that all that noise is just coming out of one little man and a violin with a microphone in.
amazing.
and then to cap it all off, last night saw the bbc electric proms at the electric ballroom in camden. there were other bands playing, but to be honest, i was just there to see one thing and one thing only.
squarepusher
oh my god. hes brilliant. not only did he do loads of stuff off hello everything, but he broke into some classics like come on my selector and journey to reedham. how good? very good? so much that i couldnt stand still. and his bass playing. it always makes me cry seeing him play. just too good. and so much fun. yes, fun. something thats missing from a lot of music these days with all the strutting and posturing that you get from such bands as kasabian and hard-fi and other shit.
hes a superb musician that likes to make stuff that physically affects you. and you get into it. and enjoy it with every once of your body. and when he stops playing. you cant help but feel like your best friend has just said bye and gone home.
let the bass kick.
